# Approach Types

### Side by side comparison of approach types

| Approach Type | Sub Category | Needle Color | Minimums | Arm Approach |
| ----------------------------------- | --------------- | ------------ | -------------------------------- | ------------ |
| ILS with vertical guidance | CAT 1 ILS | Green | DA (BARO) | APP |
| ILS with vertical guidance | CAT 2 ILS | Green | RA | APP |
| RNAV and VOR with vertical guidance | RNP | Magenta | DA | APP |
| RNAV and VOR with vertical guidance | LPV & LNAV/VNAV | Magenta | DA | APP |
| RNAV and VOR | LNAV | Magenta | MDA + 50 ft | APP |
| RNAV and VOR | VOR | Magenta | MDA + 50 ft | APP |
| Localizer without vertical guidance | Localizer | Magenta | MDA rounded up to nearest 100 ft | NAV |

**RNAV Notes**

* Use RNAV and VOR profile for RNAV-RNP, RNAV-GPS, RNAV/FMS Visual, and VOR approaches.
* VOR approaches are treated like an RNAV approach (flown in magenta needles, armed with APP). Have the VOR frequency and course set up in preview (cyan needles) as backup during the approach.
* RNAV/GPS with vertical guidance captures **GP** (glide path). FMA armed status shows **L/VNAV** or **LPV** depending on the procedure.
* After GP or GS is captured, set ALTSEL to the missed-approach altitude. ALTSEL is ignored during GS and GP.

**ILS / CAT II Notes**

* CAT I: minimums = BARO. Disconnect AP by 200 ft AGL.
* CAT II: both PFDs on RA minimums (same value), both NAV receivers on the ILS, dual valid NAV. FMA shows **APPR 2**.
* Back-course: CRS = **front course**. Use NAV or APP. GS is inhibited. See FGCS Lateral Modes.

**Localizer Notes**

* Localizer approaches are flown similar to an RNAV approach.
* Localizer approach minimums: take the published minimum and round it up to the nearest hundred feet.
